Malaysia kicked off their 2025 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2–2 draw against New Zealand at Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium, Ipoh.
Both teams entered the tournament eager to start strong, targeting maximum points in this crucial first fixture.
The Speedy Tigers, led by veteran forward Faizal Saari, absorbed early pressure from the Black Sticks before striking with deadly counterattacks.
In the 9th minute, Shello Silverius broke the deadlock with a confident finish past goalkeeper Leon Hayward, punishing New Zealand’s high press.
Malaysia nearly doubled the advantage moments later through Nik Aiman Nik Rozemi, but Hayward produced a sharp save to deny him.
The second goal eventually arrived in the 21st minute when Syed Syafiq Syed Cholan converted a penalty stroke with precision to send Malaysia 2–0 up.
The Black Sticks clawed their way back after receiving a penalty stroke of their own.
Sam Lane, their attacking spearhead, stepped up and calmly slotted past Hafizuddin Othman in the 25th minute.
Malaysia pushed hard for a third goal, but Hayward’s sharp reflexes ensured New Zealand trailed by just one heading into halftime.
Malaysia continued pressing after the restart, searching for the insurance goal.
New Zealand introduced George Enersen in goal to replace Hayward in an attempt to reset their defensive rhythm.
Despite mounting pressure, the Black Sticks found Hafizuddin in inspired form as the Malaysian keeper repeatedly shut the door on their attacks.
But the equalizer finally arrived in the 58th minute when Dylan Thomas fired home, rescuing a point for New Zealand just moments from full time.
Next match, Malaysia face Canada on 24 November as they hunt their first win of the tournament and New Zealand will take on Asian powerhouse South Korea on the same day.
