Japan delivered a masterclass in resilience and efficiency to defeat DPR Korea 1-0, clinching the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 title dramatically.
That goal proved enough for head coach Akira Ijiri’s side, who secured a record-extending seventh continental title, reaffirming Japan’s status as a powerhouse in women’s youth football.
Despite controlling possession and creating the majority of chances, DPR Korea were left frustrated by a combination of missed opportunities and inspired goalkeeping.
Captain Pak Ok I and Kang Ryu Mi both came close, while Choe Rim Jong squandered a golden early chance from close range. Time and again, they were denied by Japan goalkeeper Uruha Iwasaki, who produced a string of crucial saves to keep her side in the contest.
Their best opportunity in the second half came when substitute Choe Yon A’s long-range effort struck the woodwork, summing up a night where fortune refused to favour the titleholders.
In a final dominated for long spells by the defending champions, it was a single decisive moment that separated glory from heartbreak.
The breakthrough arrived in the 56th minute when Momoka Sano rose highest to head home a pinpoint free-kick delivery from Noa Fukushima, silencing DPR Korea’s dominance with ruthless precision.
Once ahead, Japan showcased tactical discipline and composure beyond their years. The backline absorbed relentless pressure in the closing stages, repelling wave after wave of DPR Korea attacks to protect their slender lead.
Even as DPR Korea threw everything forward in the dying minutes, Japan held firm — a hallmark of champions.
