It was a night to forget for the Malaysian national women’s hockey team as their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign hit a massive roadblock. Despite a gritty opening, the Speedy Tigress were dismantled 5-0 by a clinical Irish side in their Group B opener.
The match began as a cagey affair, with Malaysia holding their defensive lines firm to keep the scoreboard blank throughout the first quarter. However, once the deadlock was broken, the floodgates opened, and Ireland never looked back.
The collapse began in the 21st minute of the second quarter when Kathryn Mullan found the net with a sharp field goal. Just three minutes later, Ireland doubled their lead as Caoimhe Perdue converted a clinical penalty corner in the 24th minute, sent the Tigress into the halftime break trailing 2-0.
The third quarter proved disastrous for Malaysia as Ireland ignited a scoring spree. Sarah McAuley extended the lead in the 34th minute with a field goal, followed quickly by Michelle Carey in the 37th minute. The rout was finalized in the 40th minute when Roisin Upton hammered home Ireland’s fifth, effectively killing the contest before the final frame even began.
Head coach Mohd Nasihin Nubli didn’t mince words after the whistle. While he praised the initial effort, he highlighted a lapse in discipline that allowed Ireland to exploit the counter-attack.
“We actually started well against Ireland. For a while, we managed to shut them down, but due to our own errors and a lack of technical and tactical discipline, we were punished—especially by Ireland’s counter-attacks.”
Nasihin is now focused on a rapid 24-hour turnaround, urging his players to find their footing before their next do-or-die encounter.
Only the top two teams from Groups A and B will progress to the semi-finals. With zero points on the board, Malaysia’s path to the World Cup now requires near-perfection in their remaining fixtures against Canada and Japan
