Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani clinched their first title of the season in Men’s Doubles at the BWF Daihatsu Japan Open 2024, held at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama.
The Malaysian pair secured a convincing 21-19, 21-15 victory over South Korea’s Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae in the Super 750 tournament final.
This triumph marked a significant comeback for the world’s 12th-ranked duo, who had previously suffered disappointment after losing in the final of the Asian Badminton Championships last April.
The first set was a fiercely contested battle, with Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin initially taking the lead before being challenged by the world’s fourth-ranked pair from South Korea. Despite falling behind mid-game, the Malaysian duo rallied and secured the first set with a 21-19 win.
Building on their momentum, Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin dominated the second set, leading 11-8 at the interval and maintaining their composure to clinch the title with a 21-15 victory. The win earned them a prize of US$62,900 (RM274,000).
This victory also ended a long drought for Malaysia in the Men’s Doubles event at the Japan Open, with the last title coming from the partnership of Chan Chong Ming and Chew Choon Eng in 2002.
