Malaysia booked their place in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 semi-finals after edging the Philippines 1-0 at KLFA Stadium, Cheras, securing second place in Group B.
The result gave the Harimau Malaya the victory they needed to guarantee progression, while the Philippines ended their group-stage campaign without the result they had hoped for.
Interim Malaysia head coach Tan Cheng Hoe made several changes to his starting XI, bringing in Alif Ahmad, Wan Kuzain Wan Ahmad Kamal and Faris Danish Asrul in place of Endrick dos Santos, Jimmy Raymond and V. Ruventhiran.
The Philippines, meanwhile, were led defensively by former Penang FC centre-back Christian Rontini, with Carles Cuadrat opting for a 3-4-3 formation designed to counter Malaysia’s 4-3-3 system.
Malaysia started brightly, with captain Paulo Josue, G. Pavithran, Mohamadou Sumareh and Wan Kuzain repeatedly causing problems for the Philippine defence.
Their pressure finally paid off in the 16th minute. Wan Kuzain delivered a dangerous ball into the area, and G. Pavithran rose highest to head the ball beyond Philippines goalkeeper Patrick Deyto. It was a special moment for Pavithran, who scored his first goal for the Malaysian national team.
The Philippines attempted to respond and created their best opportunity of the opening half in the 34th minute when Javier Mariona tested Malaysia goalkeeper Azri Ghani, but the shot was comfortably dealt with.
Malaysia went into the interval holding a deserved 1-0 advantage.
Cuadrat reacted at half-time by introducing Noah Leddel, the newly signed Star City FC defender, and Jaime Rosquillo for Mariona and Daisuke Sato.
Mariona’s withdrawal was also influenced by an injury suffered following a heavy challenge from Malaysia’s Aliff Haiqal Lau.
Tan Cheng Hoe subsequently introduced Syafiq Ahmad for Aliff Haiqal, who had already been booked.
With 12,734 passionate Harimau Malaya supporters roaring the team forward, Malaysia continued to control the momentum and searched for the second goal that would have put the result beyond doubt.
The closest opportunity came in the 68th minute, when Kuching City FC centre-back Rodney Celvin Akwensivie came close to doubling Malaysia’s lead, only for Deyto to produce an important save.
The Philippines continued to search for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Malaysia’s defensive organisation remained strong.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for Malaysia and, more importantly, a place in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup semi-finals.
Thailand, meanwhile, finished top of the group after defeating Myanmar to close out their group-stage campaign.
Malaysia’s reward is a heavyweight semi-final showdown against defending champions Vietnam, setting up a major regional battle, and Thailand will face Singapore in the other semi-final.
