Malaysia’s emerging women’s doubles pair Low Zi Yu and Aqilah Maisarah produced one of the biggest upsets of the Yonex Taipei Open 2026 after eliminating third seeds Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Jhih Yun of Chinese Taipei to headline the nation’s performances in the Round of 16.
The young Malaysian duo displayed remarkable composure after narrowly dropping the opening game before mounting an impressive comeback to secure a 20-22, 21-13, 21-11 victory, booking a deserved place in the quarter-finals of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament.
Their victory marks one of Malaysia’s standout results of the day, especially against a higher-ranked home pair, underlining the growing potential of Low Zi Yu and Aqilah Maisarah on the international stage.
World No. 1 women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah also progressed safely after recovering from a slow start to defeat Taiwan’s Chen Yan Fei and Sun Liang Ching 11-21, 21-12, 21-15. The Malaysian top seeds once again demonstrated their championship pedigree to keep their title hopes alive.
In the men’s doubles, fifth seeds Aaron Chia and Aaron Tai delivered another clinical display, easing past Taiwan’s Lai Po Yu and Tsai Fu Cheng 21-16, 21-13 to advance comfortably into the last eight.
Malaysia also celebrated another excellent singles result through Justin Hoh, who continued his outstanding tournament run with a comeback victory over Indonesia’s P. Bagas Shujiwo. After losing the opening game 14-21, Justin responded superbly to win the next two games 21-11, 21-14 and secure his place in the quarter-finals.
However, several Malaysian representatives saw their campaigns come to an end.
Former world champion Lee Zii Jia was beaten by second seed Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei in straight games, 20-22, 11-21, while mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Clarissa San surrendered a first-game advantage before losing 21-17, 12-21, 16-21 to Thailand’s fourth seeds Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat.
Mixed doubles pair Low Han Chen and Chan Wen Tse were defeated 18-21, 17-21 by Taiwan’s Wu Guan Xun and Lee Chia Hsin, while Eogene Ewe pushed top seed Chou Tien Chen all the way before falling 17-21, 20-22 in the men’s singles.
