A disturbing incident marred Matchday 11 of the MEA Futsal Thai League 2025 between Bluewave Chonburi and Bangkok BTS FC, held at Chonburi Bluewave’s home ground, as a group of home supporters displayed an offensive act targeting the Islamic faith.
During the match, a section of Chonburi fans was seen holding up plastic bags containing pork belly and deliberately mocking and taunting the opposing team — an action clearly aimed at disrespecting the Bangkok BTS team manager, Wasan Meewong, and a majority of the team’s personnel, who are Muslim.
The provocative display, which involved showcasing pork — a substance prohibited in Islam — with intent to offend, has sparked outrage and condemnation from both the futsal community and the wider public. Such behavior blatantly violated the spirit of sportsmanship and struck at the core of religious sensitivity.
“I am deeply hurt and disappointed,” said Wasan Meewong, the Bangkok BTS FC team manager.
“In over 10 years of involvement in Thai futsal, I’ve never witnessed anything like this. I never expected this from fans of a top club like Chonburi Bluewave. What happened goes far beyond normal fan rivalry — it was a targeted, disrespectful act rooted in religious insensitivity.”
Religious belief is a deeply personal matter, and mocking it in a public sporting environment poses serious consequences. The act is not only offensive to the individuals directly involved but also to Muslims across Thailand and beyond, potentially leading to wider reputational damage for the Futsal League.
Such an incident highlights the urgent need for governing bodies to take strong, swift disciplinary action and enforce clear regulations against any form of religious discrimination or hate speech within sporting venues.
Bangkok BTS FC has called on the Thai Futsal League and relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and take appropriate measures to ensure such actions are never repeated, emphasizing that sports should unite communities — not divide them through hate.
