Malaysia made a winning start to their ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 campaign after producing a spirited second-half comeback to defeat Myanmar 2-1 in their Group B opener at Thuwunna Stadium, Yangon.
Naturalised midfielder Paulo Josué emerged as the hero for the Harimau Malaya, scoring twice after the visitors fell behind early to secure three valuable points away from home for head coach Tan Cheng Hoe.
The hosts enjoyed the perfect start in front of their passionate supporters, taking the lead in the 10th minute through Myat Kaung Khant, who capitalised on a lapse in Malaysia’s defence to put Myanmar ahead.
The early setback tested Malaysia’s resolve, but Tan Cheng Hoe’s side remained composed and gradually worked their way back into the contest.
Despite Myanmar maintaining their intensity throughout the opening half, the visitors regrouped during the interval and returned with renewed purpose.
Malaysia’s persistence paid off shortly after the restart. In the 51st minute, Paulo Josué found the equaliser to bring Harimau Malaya back on level terms and shift the momentum firmly in Malaysia’s favour.
Just six minutes later, the experienced midfielder completed the comeback from the penalty spot, confidently converting in the 57th minute to give Malaysia a 2-1 lead.
The two goals proved enough to seal victory as Malaysia defended resolutely during the closing stages to preserve their advantage.
The result represented an ideal opening to the tournament for Tan Cheng Hoe, whose tactical adjustments at halftime transformed the visitors’ performance.
Malaysia looked far more aggressive after the break, applying sustained pressure on Myanmar and creating the openings that ultimately decided the match.
The victory also validated Tan’s pre-match emphasis on remaining disciplined against Myanmar’s pace and dangerous counter-attacking style.
After surviving the early scare, Harimau Malaya showed both character and composure to leave Yangon with maximum points.
