Sydney FC, a club from Australia advanced to Quarter-Final after beating Bangkok United, a club from Thailand scoring 3-2 in the AFC Champions League Two 2024/25 Round of 16 second leg at Thammasat Stadium, Pathum Thani.
The match started explosively, with Joe Lolley giving Sydney an early lead just two minutes in, firing a powerful shot past Bangkok United goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai. However, the hosts responded in the 18th minute, as Muhsen Al-Ghassani slotted home the equalizer. The first half ended 1-1.
Bangkok United seized control in the 54th minute, capitalizing on a Sydney defensive error as Mahmoud Eid netted to make it 2-1. Their momentum was halted in the 65th minute when Thitipan Puangchan received a second yellow card, reducing the Thai side to 10 men.
Sydney took advantage, equalizing through Adrian Segecic’s header from a corner. With the score level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, the match went into extra time. Douglas Costa emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive third goal to seal Sydney’s 3-2 win.
The Australian side advanced with a 5-4 aggregate win after both teams played to a 2-2 draw in the first leg.
With the victory, Sydney FC advances to the ACL2 semi-finals, where they will face either Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (Korea Republic) or Port FC (Thailand).
