Defending champions Argentina secured their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after defeating Austria 2-0 in a hard-fought Group C clash at AT&T Stadium, Dallas, with Lionel Messi making history by becoming the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer.
The 38-year-old Argentine captain scored in the 38th minute before adding a second deep into stoppage time, taking his World Cup tally to 18 goals and surpassing Miroslav Klose’s long-standing record of 17.
The victory gives Lionel Scaloni’s side a perfect six points from two matches, confirming their progression while underlining their credentials as strong contenders to retain the world title.
Both teams entered the contest on the back of opening-match victories, with Argentina cruising past Algeria 3-0, while Austria defeated Jordan 3-1.
Argentina had a golden opportunity to take an early lead when Lautaro Martínez was brought down inside the penalty area following a VAR review.
Messi stepped up in the ninth minute, but surprisingly sent his penalty wide of the right post, allowing Austria to survive the early scare.
The missed spot-kick did little to dent Argentina’s confidence, although Austria gradually grew into the match and began creating chances of their own.
Marcel Sabitzer tested Argentina’s defence with several dangerous deliveries, while goalkeeper Alexander Schlager produced an outstanding reflex save after an unfortunate touch from teammate David Alaba nearly diverted the ball into his own net.
After a balanced spell, Argentina regained control in the closing stages of the first half.
A well-worked attacking move saw Thiago Almada release Facundo Medina down the left flank. Medina’s low cross cleverly ran through to Messi after Almada’s intelligent dummy, and the Argentine captain calmly guided his finish into the bottom corner.
The goal not only handed Argentina a deserved 1-0 advantage but also etched Messi’s name into football history as the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history with his 17th tournament goal.
Austria emerged with greater attacking intent after the break.
Within moments of the restart, the Austrians threatened through Nicolas Seiwald, while Sabitzer forced Emiliano Martínez into an impressive diving save with a curling free-kick.
Despite enjoying long periods of possession, Ralf Rangnick’s side struggled to find the cutting edge against Argentina’s disciplined defensive structure.
Argentina remained dangerous on the counterattack, with Enzo Fernández, Nicolás González, and Messi all going close to extending the lead.
As Austria committed more players forward in search of an equaliser, Argentina capitalised in stoppage time.
A swift counterattack saw the reigning champions patiently work the ball inside the penalty area before Messi applied the finishing touch to score his 18th FIFA World Cup goal, putting the result beyond doubt and completing another memorable night for the legendary forward.
With consecutive victories, Argentina have now booked their place in the knockout rounds and remain firmly on course to defend the title they captured four years ago.
Messi’s historic brace once again highlighted his enduring influence on the world stage, while Scaloni’s squad displayed the composure and experience expected of defending champions.
Austria, meanwhile, remain in contention for qualification but now face a must-win encounter in their final Group C fixture.
Argentina will conclude their Group C campaign against Jordan in Dallas, while Austria face Algeria in Kansas City in a decisive battle for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.
