Lion City Sailors head coach Aleksandar Rankovic admitted his side should have been more clinical despite their 4-2 victory over Selangor FC in the AFC Champions League Two (ACL2) Group G clash at Bishan Stadium.
Last season’s ACL2 finalists were inspired by Brazilian striker Anderson Lopes, who netted all four goals for the home side. The Red Giants replied through Chrigor Moraes and captain Faisal Halim, but it wasn’t enough to deny the Sailors their first win of the campaign.
Reflecting on the result, Rankovic expressed satisfaction with the three points but felt his team squandered too many chances.
“The only thing I want to say is that we should have scored more goals,” Rankovic told reporters.
“We also conceded a second goal that shouldn’t have happened, but that only added to the entertainment for the fans. The positive thing is that I have two or three very good strikers who push each other and that drives them to perform at their best.”
The Sailors now top Group G on goal difference, level with Persib Bandung on four points. Selangor, meanwhile, remain bottom of the group after back-to-back defeats to Bangkok United and LCS.
The Sailors’ emphatic display has once again positioned them as serious contenders for progression, while Rankovic hopes his forwards continue their scoring competition to boost the team’s chances in the next fixtures.
