The fight for the “Magnificent Seven” has reached the highest corridors of sporting justice, and they aren’t fighting alone.
Harimau Malaya CEO Rob Friend has revealed that FIFPRO, the global powerhouse for professional footballers’ rights, stood in the courtroom during a grueling 12-hour marathon hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last Thursday.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. After being slapped with a devastating 12-month ban by FIFA last September over alleged “document irregularities,” the careers of seven national stalwarts have been in limbo. But according to Friend, the defense mounted in Switzerland was nothing short of a tactical masterclass.
“FIFA brought their legal heavyweights, but we were ready. With FIFPRO and our dedicated legal team in the room, we fought for every inch of justice for these boys,” Friend told Timesport.
The players currently sidelined represent the backbone of the new-look Harimau Malaya era. The appeal involves: Rodrigo Holgado, Joao Figueiredo, Imanol Machuca, Hector Hevel, Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Jon Irazabal.
While the footballing world holds its breath, the CAS panel has requested a few more days to deliberate on the mountain of evidence presented. A formal media statement is expected next week, which will determine if these key pillars can return to the pitch for both club and country.
“It was a productive week in Lausanne. We are optimistic. We believe in the merits of our case,” Friend added, radiating a sense of calm confidence that will surely resonate with the Harimau Malaya.
