A football celebration turned into tragedy on Monday after one supporter was killed and eight others injured in a crowd crush while thousands of fans gathered to watch Jordan’s FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage clash against Algeria in central Amman.
According to the Jordan News Agency, citing the Public Security Directorate (PSD), the incident occurred at Hashemite Square, where a massive crowd had assembled to follow the country’s historic World Cup campaign on large public screens.
Emergency personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene following reports of the crush.
Nine injured supporters were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities later confirmed that one of the victims succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident, while the remaining eight suffered minor to moderate injuries.
The Public Security Directorate said preliminary findings indicate the crowd crush was caused by severe overcrowding and uncontrolled crowd movement within the packed public viewing area.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident, with forensic specialists examining the circumstances surrounding the fatality to determine the exact cause of death.
The tragic incident unfolded as thousands of supporters across Jordan gathered to watch the national team’s second Group J match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Jordan eventually suffered a 2-1 defeat to Algeria, a result that officially ended the nation’s hopes of progressing beyond the group stage in what is their debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
While football supporters had come together to celebrate one of the biggest moments in Jordanian football history, the occasion was overshadowed by the fatal crowd incident in the capital.
Jordanian authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that led to the crush, with public safety expected to become a key focus for future large-scale fan gatherings during the remainder of the FIFA World Cup.
The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of effective crowd management during major sporting events, particularly when thousands of supporters gather in public spaces to support their national team.
