Uzbekistan head coach Fabio Cannavaro has insisted his side will approach their crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K encounter against Portugal without fear, despite acknowledging they are preparing to face one of the strongest teams in world football.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference ahead of Uzbekistan’s second group-stage fixture, the 2006 FIFA World Cup-winning captain praised Portugal’s exceptional quality but stressed that his players are ready to fight until the final whistle.

Cannavaro was full of respect for Portugal’s star-studded squad, highlighting their strength across every area of the pitch.

“Our opponents are one of the strongest teams at this World Cup. If you analyse Portugal, they have outstanding players on the wings, one of the best midfield units in world football, and one of the greatest players in football history is also part of this team.

“So, it certainly won’t be an easy match. But we are at the World Cup, and we have to work together as a team. That is the only way we can leave the pitch with a positive result.”

Portugal entered the tournament as one of the favourites for the title, boasting world-class talent throughout their squad and an attacking style that has made them one of the most dangerous teams in the competition.

The Italian tactician revealed that Uzbekistan’s coaching staff has spent considerable time analysing Portugal’s playing style and tactical identity.

“We have tried to study Portugal’s football philosophy. They always like to control the game through possession, and we know they usually start matches with great intensity.

“Their objective is to take control as quickly as possible and break down their opponent’s defence early.”

Cannavaro believes his side has prepared thoroughly for the challenge.

“Based on that, I believe we have prepared well. We have our own plan and strategy, and we will try to play our own football on the pitch.

“We know we are facing a very strong team, but as I have said before, we are not afraid.

“We will try to produce our best performance and fight until the very end of the match.”

Cannavaro also discussed the physical development of his squad since arriving as Uzbekistan head coach.

The former Ballon d’Or winner explained that improving player fitness has been one of his primary objectives, especially with several players arriving from different leagues and competitive conditions.

“Since joining the team, our main focus has been improving the players’ physical condition. Some players came from different leagues, while others had certain issues.

“However, in our last match, I was pleased with what I saw. The players finished the game at a high tempo, and everyone felt physically strong.”

Cannavaro also shared his coaching philosophy, emphasising that intelligent football outweighs physical statistics.

Rather than focusing solely on distance covered, the Italian believes possession and decision-making remain the key to success at the highest level.

“Statistics are not always easy to interpret. When you look at the speed of the ball, you understand the technical quality of the players.

“I don’t like to judge only physical numbers because, in the end, what matters most is how you control the ball, how you pass it, and how rarely you lose possession.”

He explained that unnecessary turnovers create additional defensive work.

“If you lose the ball 20 times during a match, you have to run 20 times to win it back. That is a very important factor.

“Portugal’s statistics are excellent in many aspects. We know that, and we have analysed them carefully.”

Cannavaro concluded by stressing that tactical discipline will be essential against one of Europe’s elite sides.

“We don’t need to run everywhere without purpose. It’s not about running more—it’s about running correctly.

“The key is to avoid losing the ball and to know exactly where and when to win it back.”

The clash with Portugal represents one of the biggest matches in Uzbekistan’s football history, with valuable points on the line in the race for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage.

While Cannavaro openly acknowledges the magnitude of the challenge, his message is clear: Uzbekistan respects Portugal’s quality but has no intention of changing its identity or playing with fear.
