Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, kept the national flag flying at the Toyota Thailand Open 2026 after booking their place in the quarter-finals with a composed straight-sets victory on Thursday.
Competing in the Round of 16 of the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 event, the third-seeded Malaysian duo defeated China’s Huang Di and Liu Yang 21-14, 24-22 in a high-quality encounter to continue their impressive campaign in Bangkok.
The world-class Malaysian pair showed excellent control throughout the opening game, dominating the rallies with aggressive attacking play and sharp net exchanges to comfortably take the first set 21-14.
The second set, however, proved far more intense as the Chinese combination raised their tempo and pushed the Malaysians into a tense battle. Despite facing strong resistance late in the game, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin maintained their composure during crucial points before sealing the match 24-22.
The victory extends the duo’s consistent performances on the international stage as they continue chasing another major title in the 2026 season.
However, it was a difficult day overall for Malaysia’s remaining men’s doubles representatives as several pairs exited the tournament in the Round of 16.
Young Malaysian pair Bryan Goonting and Haikal Nazri were defeated by India’s top-seeded combination Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in straight sets, 12-21, 19-21. Despite the defeat, the Malaysians showed flashes of quality, especially in the second game where they pushed the Indian favourites harder.
Meanwhile, Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi were edged out by Scottish brothers Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley. The Malaysians narrowly lost the opening game 24-26 before falling 10-21 in the second.
Another Malaysian pair, Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, also bowed out after a three-game battle against Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul. After taking the first set 21-13, the Malaysians were unable to maintain momentum and eventually lost 20-22, 14-21.
With multiple Malaysian pairs eliminated, national hopes in the men’s doubles category now rest heavily on Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin as they advance into the last eight at the Thailand Open 2026.
