Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani survived a tough opening test to book their place in the next round of the Toyota Thailand Open 2026 on Wednesday.
The third-seeded Malaysian duo battled past Japan’s Hiroki Okamura and Kyohei Yamashita in a thrilling three-game encounter during the Round of 32 at the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 event.
After comfortably taking the first game 21-15, the Malaysians were pushed back by the Japanese pair who claimed the second game 21-17. However, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin responded strongly in the decider to secure a convincing 21-12 victory and progress into the Round of 16.
The victory continues the pair’s solid momentum this season as they aim to challenge for another international title.
However, it proved to be a mixed day overall for the Malaysian contingent in Bangkok.
Men’s doubles pair Choong Hon Jian and Wong Vin Sean suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Taiwan’s fourth seeds Lee Fang-Chih and Lee Fang-Jen.
The Malaysians narrowly lost the opening game 20-22 before showing tremendous fighting spirit to edge the second game 26-24. Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain the momentum and eventually fell 7-21 in the deciding game.
In women’s singles, Goh Jin Wei started brightly against Thailand’s Yataweemin Ketklieng by taking the first game 21-13. Nevertheless, the Thai player mounted a comeback to win the next two games 21-19, 21-16 and eliminate the Malaysian shuttler.
Meanwhile, Malaysian men’s singles star Lee Zii Jia endured a disappointing exit after losing in straight games to Daniil Dubovenko.
Lee pushed hard in the opening game before narrowly losing 20-22, but struggled to recover in the second game as he went down 10-21.
Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien also bowed out after losing 12-21, 15-21 to China’s seventh-seeded duo Gao Jia Xuan and Wei Ya Xin.
Despite several early exits, Malaysia still had reason to celebrate with Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin successfully carrying the nation’s challenge forward in the men’s doubles category.
All eyes will now be on the world-class Malaysian pair as they continue their pursuit of silverware in Bangkok.
