Head coach Mark Jackson praised the fighting spirit and togetherness shown by Buriram United after the Thai champions secured an impressive 3-1 away victory against Johor Darul Ta’zim in the first leg of the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup 2025/26 semi-final.
Speaking after the match at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Jackson expressed pride in his squad for delivering a composed and tactically disciplined performance in one of the club’s biggest matches of the season.
“I believe in every player in this team, especially when it comes to important matches like today,” said Jackson.
“Everyone showed that we are a great team.”
The Buriram boss highlighted the players’ commitment to executing the tactical plan, particularly during difficult phases when the team had to absorb pressure from the Malaysian champions.
“This was a very important game and we were looking forward to it. At certain moments we had to drop deeper, defend properly, and maintain our shape. That was exactly what we worked on during training,” he explained.
“Everyone worked extremely hard from before the match until the final whistle.”
Jackson also praised his players for their aggressive mentality and ability to adapt throughout the contest, especially after taking control of the game early on.
“We started the first half brilliantly. We controlled the game and scored according to the plan we prepared,” he said.
“In the second half, we still managed the game well. Today’s match showed that we can play in many different ways while constantly putting pressure on our opponents.”
The former coach stressed that teamwork remained the biggest factor behind Buriram’s success, especially against a dangerous JDT side filled with match-winners.
“JDT have many players who can change a game instantly. They are a very dangerous team,” he added.
“That’s why we must make sure we stay strong together. When you get the opportunity to play, the most important thing is to play for the team because the team is what brings victory.”
Despite the strong first-leg advantage, Jackson warned his side against complacency ahead of the decisive return leg in Thailand.
“The first match is only the beginning. We still need to stay focused for the second leg,” he said.
Jackson also credited the mentality of his players during what he described as a difficult recent period for the club.
“The only way we could score today was by attacking and putting pressure on their defence,” he explained.
“We received incredible support over the past week, which helped us fight again. Everyone stayed united and kept moving forward together.”
“Even during difficult moments, we showed strong mentality and belief. That’s what makes this team strong.”
The Buriram tactician concluded by urging his players to maintain unity and concentration for the remainder of the campaign as they chase another regional title.
“We have to focus on ourselves, stay united, and keep moving forward for the rest of the season,” Jackson said.
Buriram will host JDT in the second leg on May 13 at Buriram Stadium, carrying a valuable two-goal cushion into the decisive encounter.
