Chinese golf sensation Yin Ruoning captured the prestigious Maybank Golf Championship 2024 title, held at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC), with an impressive one-shot lead over Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul.
The 22-year-old world No. 4 golfer concluded with a brilliant 23-under-par 265, earning her fifth LPGA Tour title and an enviable prize of $450,000 (RM1.96 million).
Entering the final round tied with Jeeno and South Korean Ryu Hae Ran at 16-under-par, Ruoning surged forward with a series of birdies on the 1st, 6th, 7th, 10th, 12th, and 18th holes to finish the day seven under par with a 65. The victory marks her second LPGA title in two weeks, following her win at the Buick LPGA Shanghai.
Jeeno Thitikul’s determined play fell just short, as a single bogey on the 4th hole prevented her from securing the title, despite seven birdies and an exceptional scorecard of 67-69-64-66 for the tournament. Ryu Hae Ran closely trailed, securing third place at 21-under-par 267, showcasing steady play with six birdies on the final day.
Reflecting on her victory, Ruoning acknowledged the competition from her closest rivals, Jeeno and Hae Ran, stating, “I really had a tough fight against them today… but I’m grateful to have given my best and shared another great day with my friends.” She credited her recent success to a newfound focus on enjoying the game, which she attributes to valuable lessons from a challenging start to the season.
Meanwhile, defending champion Celine Boutier from France concluded in a tie for 12th with Malaysia’s amateur standout Mirabel Ting, both at 12-under 276. Ting’s strong finish, particularly her outstanding third-round 64, positioned her as one of the tournament’s emerging talents.
As runner-up, Jeeno walked away with $274,433 (RM1.2 million), while Hae Ran earned $199,082 (RM864,000) for her third-place finish. The closing ceremony saw the presentation of prizes by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, and Maybank Chairman Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa.
