Hassan Sunny, a Veteran Singaporean goalkeeper has officially retired from the Singapore national team, concluding a remarkable 20-year career that saw him earn 115 caps for the Lions.
In a heartfelt social media post on Sunday, August 18, Hassan expressed that it was time for him to step aside and allow younger players the opportunity to claim the No. 1 spot. “My footballing journey with the national team has been a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs, but I have cherished every moment,” he wrote. “It was always an honour to represent my country, and I will miss the team bus rides, overseas travels, packed stadiums, and so much more.”
Hassan recently gained widespread recognition, particularly among Chinese football fans, for his outstanding performance in Singapore’s 3-1 loss to Thailand during a World Cup qualifier. Despite the loss, Hassan’s 11 saves in that match were crucial in preventing Thailand from securing a three-goal victory, which would have allowed them to overtake China in the group standings. As a result, China advanced to the final round of Asian qualifiers for the World Cup alongside group leaders South Korea.
Hassan, who made his international debut in 2004, reflected on his career with humility, stating, “I have never regarded myself as the best, but I always fought my way up, giving 100 per cent in trainings and matches.” He emphasized that while he is stepping aside, he will continue to support the goalkeeping department and the team wholeheartedly.
As Hassan bids farewell to his national team career, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication and resilience. He concluded his message by wishing the Singapore National Team success in their upcoming tournaments and future endeavours.
