SPL Unveils Major Overhaul Ahead of 2025/26 Season

In a landmark move set to reshape the future of Singaporean football, the Singapore Premier League (SPL) has announced a comprehensive series of reforms for the 2025/26 season.

With a sharper focus on competitiveness, local player development, and financial incentives, the revamped structure aims to drive performance both on and off the pitch—ultimately aligning domestic standards with the nation’s long-term National Team goals.

Key Enhancements at a Glance:

  • Three-round league format with eight teams and 84 total matches
  • SPL2 introduced as a replacement for U-21 competition
  • Clubs to register a single squad of 36 to 50 players across SPL and SPL2
  • Minimum four local players on-field in SPL; six locals (including four U-23s) in SPL2
  • Prize pool doubled to S$600,000, with S$200,000 for league champions
  • Season kicks off on 16 August with the Community Shield, SPL starts on 23 August

A Bolder SPL Format to Elevate the Game

The 2025/26 SPL season will adopt a three-round league structure, featuring eight clubs competing in 21 matches each. Games will be scheduled Friday to Monday, with consistent 7.30 PM kick-offs to boost fan engagement and viewer accessibility.

Crucially, the foreign player policy has been updated: Clubs may now field up to seven foreign players on the pitch—up from six previously. At the same time, a minimum of four Singaporean players must remain on the field at all times, ensuring local talent continues to receive top-level exposure.

This dual-pronged approach balances the technical uplift from foreign influence with the continued nurturing of homegrown players.

One Squad, Two Competitions: Seamless Player Development

In a first for Singapore football, SPL clubs will now operate with a unified player pool across SPL and SPL2, consisting of 36 to 50 players—including at least 25 Singaporeans. This system allows for smoother transitions between youth and senior football, providing continuity, depth, and more opportunities.

“SPL2” will replace the traditional Under-21 COE competition and function as a fully-integrated developmental league. Featuring minimum local and U-23 player requirements, SPL2 will bridge the gap between youth progression and elite football readiness.

“This evolution gives clubs the structure to develop players more effectively while ensuring competitiveness at every level,” said a Football Association of Singapore (FAS) spokesperson.

Powering Performance with Record Prize Pool

In a bold statement of intent, the SPL’s total prize purse will more than double from S$290,000 to S$600,000. The league champions will now receive S$200,000, while runner-up and mid-table finishers will also benefit from increased financial rewards.

This incentive structure is crafted to encourage consistent, high-level performances across the board, turning every fixture into a meaningful battle with tangible stakes.

SPL2: A Game-Changer for Development

Replacing the old U-21 league, SPL2 offers a strategic platform for young and emerging players to compete in a demanding yet structured environment. Fixtures will be held from Monday to Wednesday, complementing the main SPL calendar and enabling optimal player rotation and fitness management.

With minimum on-field requirements of six locals (including four U-23 players) per match, SPL2 stands as a cornerstone in the national strategy to build a more robust talent pipeline.

Veteran players returning from injury or form slumps may also feature in SPL2, creating a dynamic ecosystem of development and experience.

Unified Vision, United Leadership

These sweeping changes are the result of consultation and consensus among SPL club chairmen and FAS leadership. The new structure reflects a shared commitment to professionalise Singapore’s domestic football scene, while reinforcing pathways that support the National Team’s competitiveness on the regional and global stage.

Season Launches 16 August

The 2025/26 season will commence with a blockbuster Community Shield clash on 16 August 2025, featuring Lion City Sailors FC vs BG Tampines Rovers FC. The first SPL league round kicks off on 23 August, ushering in a new era of elevated football for Singapore.
