Australia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after battling to a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Paraguay in their final Group D match, finishing as group runners-up after an energetic but ultimately goalless contest.
The result was enough to send the Socceroos into the knockout stage, where they will face the Group G runners-up in Dallas on 3 July, while Paraguay’s World Cup fate now depends on whether their record is sufficient to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Australia started brightly and quickly asserted control after an intense opening spell. The Socceroos consistently threatened down the right flank, with Jordan Bos, Aiden O’Neill, and Cristian Volpato combining effectively to stretch Paraguay’s disciplined defensive structure.
Captain Jackson Irvine nearly handed Australia an early breakthrough just three minutes into the match, unleashing a powerful strike that forced goalkeeper Orlando Gill into an excellent save before tipping the effort over the crossbar.
Australia continued to dictate possession throughout the first half, with Bos, Volpato and O’Neill repeatedly finding space in wide areas. However, despite their attacking intent, they were unable to provide clear-cut opportunities for dangerous forward Nestory Irankunda, as Paraguay remained compact and resilient at the back.
Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro attempted to inject fresh energy after halftime by introducing Mauricio in place of Alexandro Maidana, briefly lifting La Albirroja’s attacking momentum. Nevertheless, Australia’s organisation and defensive discipline ensured clear scoring chances remained at a premium.
The Socceroos came closest to breaking the deadlock late in the contest when Bos embarked on a superb individual run down the right wing, cutting inside two defenders before firing narrowly wide of the far post in one of the match’s best opportunities.
Despite Australia’s sustained pressure, Paraguay’s determined defensive display held firm until the final whistle, earning both sides a point.
The draw secures Australia’s passage into the Round of 32 as Group D runners-up, while Paraguay must now anxiously await the conclusion of the group stage to discover whether they have accumulated enough points to progress among the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
For Australia, the result marks another successful step in their World Cup campaign as they prepare for a knockout showdown in Dallas with confidence after navigating a challenging group stage.
