Iraq defender Rebin Sulaka has announced his retirement from international football following his country’s heavy 5-0 defeat to Senegal in their final Group A match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an emotional end to his national team career.
The 34-year-old centre-back made the announcement shortly after the final whistle, delivering a heartfelt farewell to his teammates, coaching staff, and Iraqi supporters in an emotional post-match atmosphere.
Sulaka also revealed that he has encouraged several senior members of the Iraq squad to consider stepping aside in order to create opportunities for the country’s next generation of talent.
“Perhaps this was my last match. I will reflect on it further before making my final decision, but I believe the time has come to retire,” Sulaka said.
The experienced defender accepted full responsibility for Iraq’s disappointing defeat, admitting that the red card he received in the 13th minute dramatically changed the course of the match.
Sulaka was sent off after bringing down Senegal captain Sadio Mané, forcing the Lions of Mesopotamia to play with 10 men for more than 75 minutes.
“I let down our fans and all of my teammates,” he admitted. “The red card was the turning point that shaped the match.”
Already reduced to ten players, Iraq’s task became even more difficult after first-choice goalkeeper Ahmed Basil suffered an injury, as Senegal went on to secure a commanding 5-0 victory.
Despite the painful exit, Sulaka expressed confidence in Iraq’s future, believing the squad possesses a talented young generation capable of achieving greater success.
He said the experience gained during the World Cup campaign would prove invaluable as Iraq continues its long-term development.
“We have many promising young players. I hope this team comes back stronger and makes the Iraqi people proud in the future.”
Sulaka’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter for Iraqi football. A long-serving member of the national team, the veteran defender has been one of Iraq’s defensive leaders for several years, helping guide the team through multiple international campaigns.
Although Iraq’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey ended in disappointment, Sulaka leaves the national team hoping the next generation can build on the lessons learned and lead the Lions of Mesopotamia to greater achievements on the global stage.
