Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has officially set an ambitious target of four gold medals at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, scheduled from December 9 to 20.
In total, the national body is eyeing seven medals across all badminton events, signalling renewed confidence in Malaysia’s rising form on the regional stage.
BAM President Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the targets were formulated based on current world rankings, performance trends, and the proven strength of Malaysia’s top pairs—especially in mixed doubles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and the men’s team event.
“I’ve discussed this with the Youth and Sports Minister (Hannah Yeoh) and the management. This is a collective decision, and the coaches agree with the direction.
We must give our best for the country—and remember, Malaysia won’t be the only team sending their strongest lineup. Other nations are bringing their best as well,”
Tengku Zafrul told reporters after the national badminton flag-handover ceremony today.
In October, BAM unveiled what is arguably Malaysia’s most potent SEA Games squad in recent memory, featuring two reigning world champions:
- Aaron Chia – Soh Wooi Yik (Men’s Doubles)
- Chen Tang Jie – Toh Ee Wei (Mixed Doubles)
The roster also includes several star performers who have stamped their presence on the world stage:
- Pearly Tan – M. Thinaah (Women’s Doubles) – 2025 World Championships runners-up
- Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh (Men’s Singles)
- K. Letshanaa, Wong Ling Ching (Women’s Singles)
Supporting them are other top-tier pairs:
- Man Wei Chong – Tee Kai Wun (Men’s Doubles)
- Go Pei Kee – Teoh Mei Xing (Women’s Doubles)
- Hoo Pang Ron – Cheng Su Yin (Mixed Doubles)
All selected players will also feature in their respective team events, further strengthening Malaysia’s medal prospects.
The men’s team will be bolstered by Eogene Ewe and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, while the women’s team gains additional support from Siti Zulaikha Muhammad Azmi and Eng Ler Qi—ensuring competitive depth across all categories.
The 2025 SEA Games will take place across Bangkok and Chonburi, two regions with world-class sporting facilities. With regional rivals also expected to deploy full-strength squads—particularly Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam—the badminton competition is shaping up to be one of the most intense in recent editions.
