Indonesia reignited their 2026 World Cup qualifying hopes with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Bahrain, in front of a roaring 69,000-strong crowd at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta.
After suffering a humbling 1-5 defeat to Australia in Patrick Kluivert’s debut match as head coach, Ole Romeny’s 24th-minute strike proved decisive, securing a crucial three points.
With just two matches remaining, Japan has already secured qualification, while Australia sits second with 13 points. Saudi Arabia (10 points) and Indonesia (9 points) are battling for third place, which offers another opportunity to qualify through the intercontinental playoffs.
Kluivert credited Indonesia’s passionate supporters for pushing the team to victory.
“This is amazing, I knew the atmosphere would be like this with 69,000 fans cheering. I want to thank them for their incredible support,” he said.
Despite the win, the Dutch legend believes there is still room for growth as Indonesia aims for a historic World Cup debut.
“We have to be happy with this result. We deserved the win with the chances we created and could have scored more.”
“The loss against Australia was tough, but this result is for the fans. This is just the beginning, and we have until June to get better,” Kluivert added.
Indonesia’s dream of making their first World Cup since gaining independence in 1945 is still alive. With two matches left, every point will be crucial in their quest for history.
