Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has officially appointed Gavin Lee as the new Head Coach of the Singapore Men’s National Team, marking a bold new chapter for the Lions just one week after their unforgettable comeback victory over Hong Kong, China.
The 35-year-old tactician—who guided Singapore to a dramatic 2-1 win in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers on 18 November as interim coach—now steps into the role permanently after steering the Lions to qualify on merit for the AFC Asian Cup Finals for the first time in history.
Lee’s elevation comes after a months-long global search for a new head coach. While several foreign candidates impressed, FAS ultimately found the ideal leader was already in-house.
FAS President Forrest Li praised Lee’s impact:
“Gavin has inspired trust and confidence. The cohesion and resilience shown by our Lions came from his familiarity with the players and staff. We believe he will help the team grow from strength to strength as we prepare for the Asian Cup Finals.”
Lee’s clear tactical identity, detailed preparation, and strong rapport with players were decisive factors in FAS’ choice.
For Lee, who began his coaching career guiding Under-4 boys and girls, the appointment is a dream built on dedication.
“To be entrusted with the National Team is a true honour. I hope it shows others that with commitment and hard work, opportunities like this are achievable.”
His coaching style—meticulous analysis, unity-focused leadership, and tactical discipline—has shaped a Lions squad that competes with belief and clarity.
Lee took over as interim coach in June following the departure of Tsutomu Ogura. Having served as his assistant, Lee praised Ogura’s groundwork:
“After the final whistle, my second call was to him — to thank him for being part of this journey. We wouldn’t be here without the early work that set us on our path.”
Under Lee’s guidance, Singapore claimed three away wins in the qualifying campaign, including two comeback victories—cementing a new identity built on resilience, desire, and tactical clarity.
With Singapore set to compete among Asia’s elite in Saudi Arabia in 2027, Lee has already begun planning the Lions’ preparation programme.
His first official match as permanent head coach will be in March 2026, when Singapore host Bangladesh in the final Group C fixture at the National Stadium.
Lee is also the first permanent local head coach since V. Sundram Moorthy (2016), marking a special milestone for Singaporean coaching development.
