Al Ahli Saudi Head coach, Matthias Jaissle, admitted relief after battling past Johor Darul Ta’zim in a dramatic AFC Champions League Elite 2025/26 quarter-final, overcoming adversity to secure a place in the last four.
In a fiercely contested encounter, the Malaysian champions pushed the defending titleholders to their limits, underlining their growing stature on the continental stage.
The tie saw Xisco Muñoz’s side deliver a spirited and disciplined performance, even taking the lead through an own goal by Ali Majrashi.
Despite later being reduced to 10 men, Al Ahli showed resilience and championship pedigree, turning the match around with crucial goals from Franck Kessié and Galeno.
Speaking after the match, Jaissle highlighted the difficulty of overcoming a well-organised JDT side, praising both his players and supporters for their role in the victory.
“We progressed to the next round in a very tough and intense match, even after the red card,” said Jaissle.
“It’s never easy to face a strong opponent like JDT, but we managed it. The mentality and discipline of the players, along with the incredible support from our fans, made the difference. We deserved to go through.”
The result not only sends Al Ahli into the semi-finals but also leaves them as the sole Saudi representative remaining in the competition, following the elimination of Al Ittihad at the hands of Machida Zelvia.
Al Ahli will now turn their attention to a blockbuster semi-final clash against Japan’s Vissel Kobe, who advanced after edging out Al Sadd SC in a penalty shootout.
With momentum, belief, and experience on their side, Jaissle’s men are now firmly focused on one objective — reaching the final and defending their continental crown.
