Independent Malaysian pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani produced a sensational display to upset top seeds Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik and storm into the men’s doubles final of the Malaysia Masters at the Unifi Arena, Bukit Jalil.
The world No. 9 duo needed only 33 minutes to dismantle the world No. 2 pair 21-18, 21-12 in a dominant all-Malaysian semi-final clash on Saturday.
Coming into the match, Aaron-Wooi Yik were widely regarded as favourites after reaching last year’s final and holding a superior head-to-head record. However, Sze Fei-Izzuddin delivered one of their sharpest performances of the season, controlling the pace with aggressive attacking play and superb court coverage.
After edging a closely contested opening game 21-18, the independent pair completely took over in the second set, overwhelming Aaron-Wooi Yik with relentless pressure and precision to seal victory in emphatic fashion.
The win marks another major statement from Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who continue to strengthen their reputation as one of Malaysia’s most dangerous men’s doubles combinations on the world stage.
Their reward is a place in the final, where they will face either fellow Malaysians Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King or Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard.
Malaysia could yet celebrate an all-Malaysian final should Arif-Roy King overcome the Danish pair in the other semi-final encounter.
