Kuala Lumpur City FC has received a special approval from the Malaysian Football League (MFL) to register a minimum of 12 players for their Unifi Liga Super 2026/27 fixture against Kuching City FC at Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, on Wednesday night.
The decision comes as KL City continues to deal with the consequences of a FIFA player-registration ban stemming from outstanding financial cases involving former players.
MFL confirmed that its Board of Directors approved the club’s request after receiving a formal application regarding the status of its player registrations.
In an official application dated 26 August 2026, Kuala Lumpur City informed MFL that they had settled outstanding payments owed to three former foreign players.
However, the club is still waiting for FIFA to formally approve the withdrawal of the player-registration ban.
Should the ban remain in place before Wednesday night’s kick-off, KL City would be unable to complete their normal squad registration and therefore requested special permission to proceed with a minimum squad of 12 players.
The MFL Board has granted Kuala Lumpur City FC special approval to register a minimum of 12 players for the fixture against Kuching City FC.
The move allows the match to go ahead while the club continues working through the FIFA process.
Although MFL has provided temporary relief, KL City have been warned that the situation must be resolved quickly.
The club has been instructed to take all necessary steps to complete its player-registration process and ensure its squad complies with league requirements before the end of the first Malaysia League registration window on 3 September 2026.
That deadline is now particularly important for KL City as they attempt to stabilise their squad and avoid further complications during the opening stages of the Super League season.
The club recently lost a scheduled Unifi Liga Super Malaysia 2026/27 fixture against Negeri Sembilan FC by a 3-0 administrative result after failing to field a team, with MFL also imposing a RM50,000 fine.
KL City are now under intense pressure to ensure they can fulfil their remaining fixtures while resolving their registration issues.
