Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei have officially withdrawn from the 2026 BWF World Championships, with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirming that Ee Wei will continue her recovery following recent knee surgery.
The decision was made on the advice of the medical team, with BAM placing Ee Wei’s long-term health and full rehabilitation above any immediate return to competition.
BAM stated that Ee Wei is progressing through her rehabilitation programme after undergoing knee surgery, and the national governing body is determined not to rush her comeback ahead of one of badminton’s biggest tournaments.
Protecting the 24-year-old’s long-term career remains the priority, with the withdrawal allowing her to focus entirely on regaining full fitness.
In addition to confirming the pair’s withdrawal, BAM revealed that it has submitted an official application to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) requesting protection of Ee Wei’s world ranking while she remains sidelined during rehabilitation.
If approved, the ranking protection would help minimise the impact of her absence from international competition and ease the pair’s return once she is medically cleared to compete again.
Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei have established themselves as one of Malaysia’s leading mixed doubles combinations, making their absence from the World Championships a significant blow to the national squad.
Nevertheless, BAM reiterated that ensuring Ee Wei makes a complete recovery is more important than rushing her return for a single tournament.
The association also extended its best wishes to the shuttler, expressing confidence that the duo will return to the international stage stronger once Ee Wei has fully recovered.
With rehabilitation now the primary focus, Malaysian badminton fans will be hoping to see Chen-Toh back in action and challenging for major honours later in the season.
