Malaysia enjoyed an encouraging start to the Yonex Taipei Open 2026, with several of the nation’s leading shuttlers advancing to the Round of 16 after producing impressive performances in Wednesday’s (29 July) Round of 32 at the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 event.
Leading the Malaysian charge was former world No. 2 Lee Zii Jia, who recovered from dropping the opening game to defeat Taiwan’s Liao Jhuo-Fu in three games, 22-24, 21-12, 21-15.
The victory showcased Lee’s composure and attacking quality, as he turned the match around after a tightly contested opening game to book his place in the second round.
Women’s doubles top seeds Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah also continued their excellent form with a straight-games victory over Japan’s Mao Hatasue and Kanano Muroya, winning 21-15, 21-17 to comfortably progress.
In men’s doubles, fifth seeds Aaron Chia and Aaron Tai survived an early scare before defeating Taiwan’s Wu Guan Xun and Wu Hsuan-Yi 18-21, 21-9, 21-14, underlining their resilience after losing the opening game.
Young men’s singles prospect Justin Hoh produced one of Malaysia’s standout performances of the day, overcoming Indonesia’s fifth seed Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah in three games, 21-14, 15-21, 21-11, to secure an impressive upset and continue his encouraging season.
Another Malaysian men’s singles player, Eogene Ewe, also advanced after defeating India’s Saneeth Dayanand 21-4, 19-21, 21-12, while mixed doubles pair Low Han Chen and Chan Wen Tse battled back to beat Taiwan’s fifth seeds Liu Kuang Heng and Hsu Yin-Hui 15-21, 21-13, 21-18.
Malaysia also celebrated a convincing women’s doubles victory through Low Zi Yu and Aqilah Maisarah, who comfortably defeated Taiwan’s Lin Xiao Min and Peng Yu Wei 21-17, 21-10.
Despite the positive overall showing, several Malaysian representatives bowed out in the opening round.
Women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei suffered a narrow defeat to Canada’s Zhang Wen Yu, losing 17-21, 20-22, while men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong and Soh Wooi Yik were edged out by Japan’s Haruki Kawabe and Kenta Matsukawa 9-21, 22-20, 14-21.
In another disappointment, women’s doubles seventh seeds Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting fell in straight games to Thailand’s Hathaithip Mijad and N. Tungkasatan, while men’s doubles pair Arif Junaidi and Kang Khai Xing were eliminated by Indonesia’s Ali Faathir Rayhan and Devin A. Wahyudi after a hard-fought contest.
Elsewhere, men’s doubles duo Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong lost to South Korea’s Jin Yong and Lee Jong Min, while mixed doubles pair Lee Yi Bo and Lim Chiew Sien were beaten by Taiwan’s Wu Guan Xun and Lee Chia Hsin.
With a healthy number of representatives progressing into the Round of 16, Malaysia remains firmly in contention across multiple disciplines.
The performances of Lee Zii Jia, Pearly-Thinaah, Aaron Chia-Aaron Tai, Justin Hoh and the country’s emerging young talents provide plenty of optimism as Malaysia continues its campaign in Taipei, aiming for another successful week on the BWF World Tour.
