Chelsea secured their place in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 final in style, delivering a clinical 2-0 victory over Brazilian side Fluminense in a much-anticipated semi-final clash.
The showdown at MetLife Stadium drew global attention as fans watched eagerly to see which team would become the first to reach the final. The match also marked a sentimental reunion for Chelsea’s veteran defender Thiago Silva, who faced his former club in what could be one of his final appearances in top-level football.
Joao Pedro, stepping in for the suspended Liam Delap, spearheaded Chelsea’s attack and did not disappoint. On the opposite side, German Cano led the Fluminense frontline, hoping to inspire a Brazilian upset.
Fluminense started the match with greater possession and tempo, pressing Chelsea’s backline and testing their defensive discipline. However, it was the Blue contingent of supporters who erupted in celebration first when Joao Pedro struck a stunning curling shot into the top corner in the 18th minute, giving Chelsea a 1-0 lead.
Just minutes later, Malo Gusto nearly doubled the lead with a well-timed header, but Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio denied him with a sharp save.
Fluminense thought they had their equalizer in the 26th minute through Hercules, but Marc Cucurella heroically cleared the ball off the line in a moment of brilliance. The Brazilian side were then denied a penalty after VAR overturned a handball decision against Trevoh Chalobah, much to the frustration of coach Renato Portaluppi.
Chelsea carried the 1-0 advantage into the break
Fluminense introduced Everaldo and Keno after halftime in a bid to regain control, but Chelsea’s tactical discipline and quick transitions proved decisive.
Joao Pedro struck again in the 56th minute, smashing in his second goal of the night with a powerful shot that left Fabio with no chance, putting the English club in firm control at 2-0.
Christopher Nkunku nearly added a third shortly after, only to be denied by the alert Thiago Silva, who cleared the ball just inches before it crossed the line.
Substitute Nicolas Jackson had a golden chance to seal it in the 80th minute, but his shot grazed the side netting after a promising run.
Despite their relentless pressure, Chelsea were unable to add to their tally. Still, the 2-0 scoreline was more than enough to book their place in the Club World Cup Final, where they now await the winner of the Real Madrid vs Paris Saint-Germain semi-final.
