Malaysia experienced a mixed start at the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 after several national shuttlers battled through tough opening-round matches at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Center in Ningbo, China on Wednesday.
While some Malaysian players progressed to the next round, others were forced to make an early exit from the prestigious continental tournament.
Professional men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani saw their campaign come to an abrupt end after suffering a hard-fought defeat in the opening round.
Seeded seventh in the tournament, the Malaysian duo were edged out by Thailand’s Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn and Worrapol Thongsa-Nga in a three-game thriller 24–22, 18–21, 21–11.
The intense contest saw both pairs trading momentum, but the Thai combination ultimately proved stronger in the deciding game to eliminate the Malaysians.
Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun also bowed out in the first round after falling to China’s formidable pair He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu.
The Chinese duo secured victory in straight games 21–18, 21–18, ending the Malaysian pair’s challenge at the tournament.
In contrast, Malaysia’s leading women’s doubles partnership Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan delivered an impressive performance to progress to the second round.
The pair defeated Hong Kong’s Fan Ka Yan and Yau May Ying convincingly, 21–14, 21–11, showcasing strong coordination and attacking play.
Pearly and Thinaah will next face Taiwan’s Hsu Yin-Hui and Lin Jhin Yun for a place in the quarter-finals.
Malaysia also had reason to celebrate in women’s singles as K. Letshanaa secured her spot in the second round with a straight-games victory over India’s Tanvi Sharma 21–19, 21–14.
Letshanaa will now face South Korea’s Sim Yu Jin, who produced a surprise comeback victory over China’s fifth seed Han Yue.
However, it was disappointing for another Malaysian women’s singles contender, Goh Jin Wei, who was knocked out after losing 12–21, 15–21 to Japan’s rising star Tomoka Miyazaki.
With several Malaysian representatives still in the competition, attention now turns to the upcoming matches as the nation’s remaining shuttlers aim to keep Malaysia’s challenge alive at the Badminton Asia Championships 2026.
