France overcame a stubborn Paraguay side to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory and book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals at Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia.
A second-half penalty from captain Kylian Mbappé proved decisive as Didier Deschamps’ men finally broke down Paraguay’s disciplined defensive resistance to earn a blockbuster last-eight showdown against Morocco in Boston on Thursday.
Paraguay adopted an ultra-defensive approach from the opening whistle, deploying a back five supported by four midfielders and relying solely on Julio Enciso up front.
The South Americans frustrated France with aggressive defending and physical challenges throughout the contest, limiting Les Bleus despite waves of sustained pressure. Their robust approach frequently tested the referee’s tolerance, with several heavy tackles sparking frustration among the French players.
France, meanwhile, lined up with an attacking quartet of Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, and Kylian Mbappé, although they were without influential midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, who missed the match through injury.
The 2018 world champions controlled possession from start to finish and created numerous opportunities.
Mbappé threatened inside the opening minute after being picked out by Jules Koundé, while Dembélé, Adrien Rabiot and Barcola all came close as France repeatedly forced Paraguay deep into their own half.
Despite France’s dominance, Paraguay’s defence held firm, with goalkeeper Orlando Gill producing several important interventions to keep the score level.
France continued to press after the break, with Rabiot, Koundé and Mbappé all testing the Paraguayan defence, but the breakthrough remained elusive.
The decisive moment finally arrived in the 70th minute. Substitute Désiré Doué burst into the penalty area before being brought down by a reckless challenge. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
Mbappé stepped up with trademark composure, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026, further strengthening his position among the tournament’s leading scorers.
Paraguay attempted to mount a late response but never seriously threatened France’s lead, allowing Les Bleus to comfortably see out the victory.
The win sends France into the quarter-finals, where they will face an in-form Morocco side that advanced with a commanding 3-0 victory over Canada earlier on Saturday.
While the scoreline was narrow, France’s dominance throughout the contest underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites.
With Mbappé once again proving decisive on the biggest stage, Didier Deschamps’ side remains firmly on course in its pursuit of a third FIFA World Cup title, but a confident Moroccan side now stands in the way of a place in the semi-finals.
