Iran produced a disciplined defensive display to earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Belgium in their second Group G match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand delivering a standout performance to preserve a valuable point.
The result leaves both Iran and Belgium on two points, although Team Melli temporarily remain top of Group G after playing one match more than New Zealand and Egypt.
Iran thought they had taken the lead in the 25th minute when Mehdi Taremi found the back of the net from a set-piece situation. However, after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, denying Amir Ghalenoei’s side a crucial breakthrough.
Belgium enjoyed periods of possession but repeatedly found themselves frustrated by the inspired Beiranvand, who produced several key saves to deny the European giants and maintain Iran’s clean sheet.
The match swung in Iran’s favour in the 66th minute when Belgium were reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Orel Mangala. Despite enjoying a numerical advantage for the remainder of the contest, Iran were unable to capitalize and find the winning goal.
Nevertheless, the disciplined defensive effort and another clean sheet ensure Iran remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages ahead of the decisive final group match.
With four teams still battling for qualification, Group G remains finely balanced, and Iran will head into the final round knowing their Round of 32 hopes remain very much alive.
While the goalless draw may not have provided the victory Iran desired, it demonstrated the resilience and organization of Ghalenoei’s squad against one of Europe’s strongest sides.
Beiranvand’s commanding display between the posts proved decisive, while Iran’s defensive unit successfully contained Belgium despite sustained pressure throughout the match.
With the group still wide open, Team Melli now turn their attention to their final Group G fixture, where qualification for the knockout rounds remains firmly within their grasp.
