Uruguay squandered a golden opportunity to move within touching distance of the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after being held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Cape Verde in their second Group H fixture at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami.
After recovering from an early setback to lead 2-1 before halftime, Marcelo Bielsa’s side could not protect their advantage as Cape Verde produced another spirited display to earn a valuable point, ensuring the battle for qualification will be decided on the final matchday.
Both teams entered the contest knowing victory would significantly boost their Round of 32 hopes after opening their campaigns with a draw.
Cape Verde made the brighter start and deservedly broke the deadlock in the 21st minute through a stunning free-kick from Kevin Pina, leaving Uruguay chasing the game.
La Celeste gradually found their rhythm and were rewarded just before halftime. Maximiliano Araújo restored parity in the 44th minute, before Uruguay completed the turnaround deep into first-half stoppage time when Agustín Canobbio fired home in the 51st minute, giving Bielsa’s men a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.
However, Cape Verde refused to surrender. Just two minutes after coming off the bench, substitute Hélio Varela made an instant impact by netting the equaliser in the 61st minute, stunning Uruguay and setting up a tense final half-hour.
Despite sustained pressure from both sides, neither team could find a decisive winner as the points were shared in an entertaining encounter.
The draw leaves Spain at the top of Group H with four points following their emphatic victory over Saudi Arabia.
Uruguay remain second with two points, edging Cape Verde on goal difference, while Saudi Arabia sit bottom with one point.
Everything will now be decided on the final matchday, with Uruguay facing the toughest possible challenge against group leaders Spain, while Cape Verde meet Saudi Arabia in another must-win encounter.
