Austria made a winning start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey after defeating Jordan 3-1 in an entertaining Group J encounter at Levi’s Stadium, San Francisco.
The European side controlled possession and dictated the tempo from the opening whistle, eventually turning their dominance into a deserved victory. However, Jordan’s competitive display ensured Austria were forced to work hard for all three points.
Austria broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when Rainer Schmid finished clinically after being picked out by a precise pass from Axel Schlager, giving Ralf Rangnick’s men a deserved 1-0 advantage.
The Austrians maintained control throughout the remainder of the first half, enjoying the majority of possession and moving the ball confidently across the pitch. Jordan, meanwhile, remained disciplined defensively and looked to threaten on the counterattack.
Jordan emerged with renewed energy in the second half and quickly found a route back into the match. Just five minutes after the restart, Ali Olwan capitalized on excellent work from Nizar Al-Rawabdeh to fire home the equalizer in the 50th minute, sparking celebrations among the Jordanian supporters.
The goal shifted momentum and briefly placed Austria under pressure as Jordan sensed the opportunity to pull off a major result against one of Europe’s most organized sides.
Seeking to regain control, Austria introduced a series of substitutions, including the arrivals of David Alaba, Christian Chukwuemeka, and Pascal Mweene, which helped restore balance and attacking urgency.
A dramatic moment arrived in the 67th minute when Marko Arnautović thought he had restored Austria’s lead, only for VAR to intervene and disallow the goal for handball.
Austria’s pressure finally paid off in the 76th minute when Jordan defender Yazan Al-Arab inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure, handing the Europeans a crucial 2-1 advantage.
Jordan responded with a series of attacking substitutions as they chased another equalizer, introducing fresh legs across the final stages. Despite their efforts, Austria remained composed and managed the closing moments effectively.
Deep into stoppage time, Austria sealed the victory when they were awarded a penalty. Veteran striker Marko Arnautović stepped up and converted confidently in the 102nd minute, putting the result beyond doubt and completing a 3-1 triumph.
The statistics reflected Austria’s superiority in controlling the game. They enjoyed 63% possession, completed 580 passes, and registered a higher passing accuracy than Jordan.
However, Jordan proved far more competitive than the scoreline alone suggests. Both teams recorded 11 total shots, while each managed four efforts on target, highlighting the efficiency that ultimately separated the two sides.
Jordan striker Ali Olwan was one of the standout performers of the match, earning the highest player rating after scoring his side’s lone goal and consistently troubling Austria’s defense.
The victory places Austria in a strong early position in Group J, especially after reigning champions Argentina opened their campaign with a convincing win over Algeria.
For Jordan, despite the defeat, there were encouraging signs from their World Cup debut campaign. The Middle Eastern side demonstrated resilience, attacking intent, and the ability to compete against established European opposition.
Austria now turn their attention to a crucial showdown against defending champions Argentina on 23 June, while Jordan will look to bounce back when they face Algeria on the same day in what could prove to be a pivotal fixture in the race for qualification.
