Badminton World Federation has officially approved a major बदलाव to the sport’s scoring format, confirming that a new 15-point system (best of three games) will be introduced starting January 4, 2027.
The decision was ratified during the 87th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at Comwell Hotel Horsens, where member associations from across the globe gathered to vote on the proposal.
A total of 242 member nations participated in the vote, with 198 voting in favor and 43 against—comfortably surpassing the required two-thirds majority needed to pass the motion.
The reform will see matches shift from the current 21-point system to 15 points per game, while maintaining the best-of-three-games format (15×3).
The move marks one of the most significant structural changes in modern badminton, aimed at Increasing match intensity, Shortening match duration, Enhancing spectator engagement.
The new format is expected to bring faster-paced encounters, potentially reshaping tactical approaches at both elite and grassroots levels.
With implementation set for 2027, players, coaches, and federations now face a transition period to adapt strategies, training methods, and match preparation to the revised scoring dynamics.
