Malaysia’s Sudirman Cup 2025 campaign came to a heartbreaking halt after a dominant Chinese squad swept them aside 3-0 in a one-sided quarter-final clash at the Fenghuang Gymnasium on Friday.
Facing the 13-time champions in front of a raucous home crowd, the Malaysian team always knew the odds were stacked heavily against them. Despite flashes of grit and determination, they simply could not match the relentless pace, power, and precision of the Chinese juggernaut.
Malaysia’s mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei were tasked with setting the tone — and gave everything they had. Up against world-class opponents Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping, the Malaysians battled fiercely, producing several dazzling rallies and moments of brilliance. But the Chinese pair’s composure and consistency proved decisive.
Tang Jie and Ee Wei fell in straight games, 17-21, 17-21, after 49 minutes of intense action — giving China the early edge.
Fresh off a sensational upset over world No. 8 Kodai Naraoka in the group stages, men’s singles hope Leong Jun Hao stepped up next with high expectations. However, the gulf in class against world No. 1 Shi Yuqi was apparent from the outset.
Jun Hao never found his rhythm and was simply overpowered. In just 38 minutes, he succumbed 6-21, 14-21, handing China a commanding 2-0 lead and leaving Malaysia on the brink of elimination.
K. Letshanaa, Malaysia’s final hope to salvage the tie, faced an immense challenge in Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Chen Yufei. The Chinese star showed no mercy, dismantling Letshanaa 21-8, 21-7 in a clinical 30-minute display to seal victory for China.
The 0-3 defeat not only ended Malaysia’s run in Xiamen but also marked their earliest exit from the Sudirman Cup since 2019. It was a bitter disappointment for a team that had reached the semi-finals in the past two editions — in Vantaa (2021) and Suzhou (2023) — returning with bronze medals.
While the result highlights the clear gap between Malaysia and the elite of world badminton, it also serves as a rallying point. With young talents like Jun Hao, Letshanaa, and the promising mixed doubles pair gaining valuable exposure, the team can build toward future international success.
