Malaysia enjoyed a productive opening day at the SANDS CHINA LTD. Macau Open 2026 after several representatives successfully progressed through the qualifying rounds and Round of 32 matches at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, with men’s doubles emerging as the country’s strongest department.
A number of Malaysian pairs booked their places in the Round of 16, while young singles players also showed encouraging performances despite mixed results.
The experienced-young combination of Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong produced a composed display to begin their campaign, defeating Indonesia’s M. Putra Erwiansyah and Bagas Maulana 21-14, 21-15.
The victory reinforced their status as one of the tournament favourites and ensured Malaysia’s presence in the men’s doubles second round.
Joining them in the last 16 were seventh seeds Choi Sol Gyu and Goh V Shem, who needed just two games to dispatch Taiwan’s Chang Ko-Chi and Cheng Sheng Fa 21-15, 21-13.
Another Malaysian pair, Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong, also impressed with a straight-games 21-14, 21-15 victory over neutral athletes Rodion Alimov and Maksim Ogloblin.
Meanwhile, Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi demonstrated resilience after dropping the opening game before fighting back to overcome Taiwan’s Su Ching Heng and Tang Kai Wei 19-21, 21-13, 21-16.
However, it was disappointment for Choong Hon Jian and Wong Vin Sean, who pushed fourth-seeded Indonesians Ali F. Rayhan and Devin A. Wahyudi to three games before narrowly losing 15-21, 22-20, 13-21.
Another Malaysian pair, Faiq Masawi and Lok Hong Quan, bowed out after a 11-21, 10-21 defeat to Thailand’s C. Charoenkitamorn and W. Thongsa-Nga.
Malaysia’s women’s doubles hopes received a boost through second seeds Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting, who recovered from losing the opening game to defeat India’s Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra 20-22, 21-16, 21-12.
The pair showed strong mental resilience to turn the match around and keep their title aspirations alive.
In contrast, Cheng Su Hui and Tan Zhing Yi were unable to advance after falling 16-21, 13-21 to Taiwan’s Chou Yun An and Sung Yi-Hsuan.
One of the standout Malaysian performers of the day was Huan Kai Hern, who successfully navigated two rounds of men’s singles qualifying.
The youngster first defeated Azerbaijan’s Dicky Dwi Pangestu 21-13, 21-1 before producing an even more impressive victory over Canada’s Sheng Xiaodong 21-19, 22-20 to secure a place in the main draw.
Compatriot Lim Ming Hong also started strongly with a 21-12, 21-18 win against Italy’s Fabio Caponio, but his run ended in the second qualifying round following a 16-21, 19-21 loss to Taiwan’s Kuo Kuan Lin.
Elsewhere, Tan Jia Jie battled hard but narrowly missed out on qualification after suffering a three-game defeat to Canada’s Sheng Xiaodong, 18-21, 21-19, 19-21.
Malaysia’s men’s doubles depth was further highlighted when Boon Xin Yuan and Lwi Sheng Hao comfortably defeated India’s Bhargav R. Arigela and Viswa Tej Gobburu 21-16, 21-12 to advance to the next round.
