Selangor FC head coach Kim Pan-gon has warned his players against adopting a defensive mentality ahead of the decisive Shopee Cup 2025/26 semi-final second leg against Nam Dinh FC.
Speaking during the official pre-match press conference at Thien Truong Stadium, Kim stressed that Selangor’s narrow 2-1 advantage from the first leg would not change the team’s attacking philosophy.
The South Korean tactician revealed that the Red Giants had undergone strong tactical and psychological preparation ahead of what he described as a “critical moment” for the club.
“We had a very good preparation period for this away game,” said Kim.
“Psychologically and mentally, everyone understands how important this match is. Tactically, we have prepared very well over the last few days and I believe we are ready.”
Despite acknowledging Nam Dinh’s strength at home, Kim made it clear that Selangor would not sit back and defend their aggregate lead.
“We expect Nam Dinh to attack strongly because they have the home advantage,” he explained.
“But we are not only preparing to defend. We also have a strong strategy to attack them. One goal advantage is not comfortable enough for us, so we are looking to score again.”
Kim expects an open and highly competitive encounter, with both teams likely to attack aggressively in pursuit of a place in the final.
The Selangor boss also highlighted the danger posed by several Nam Dinh players, admitting the Vietnamese side possess significant attacking quality. However, he expressed confidence in Selangor’s defensive organisation after successfully containing their threats in the first leg.
“Our defenders performed very well in the previous match,” he said.
“We have a strong defensive line individually and collectively. To win tomorrow, we must have the right balance between defending and attacking.”
Kim further confirmed that Selangor travel to Vietnam with a fully fit squad and no suspension concerns, giving him maximum flexibility for team selection ahead of the crucial showdown.
With a place in the Shopee Cup final at stake, Kim believes his players fully understand the magnitude of the opportunity in front of them.
“We cannot lose this kind of opportunity,” he added.
“I believe our players are fully aware and ready to fight for a place in the final.”
