Johor Darul Ta’zim FC (JDT) has clarified its decision to negotiate the early release of Arif Aiman Hanapi, Feroz Baharudin, and Matt Davies from national duty.
The move, announced by JDT Technical Director Alistair Edwards, aims to prioritize preparations for their pivotal AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) match against Shandong Taishan.
The Southern Tigers are scheduled to depart for China on November 21, just one day after the players would have returned from representing Harimau Malaya in their international friendly against India on November 18. JDT emphasized the need for the trio’s recovery and reintegration into the squad ahead of this crucial encounter.
JDT’s commitment to the ACLE underscores the club’s larger vision of elevating Malaysian football on the international stage. With significant investments this season, the club is not only striving to cement its position among Asia’s elite but also to boost Malaysia’s football ranking. A strong showing in the ACLE could open doors for more Malaysian clubs to compete at the highest level in the future.
In a gesture of mutual respect, JDT reached an agreement with Harimau Malaya head coach Pau Marti and the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). While the three outfield players will return early, goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi will remain with the national team, as JDT has relied on Spanish goalkeeper Andoni Zubiaurre for their ACLE campaign.
JDT expressed gratitude to Pau Marti and the FAM for their understanding, reiterating the importance of collaboration between clubs and the national team. The club reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Malaysia’s efforts in qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup while striving for success in Asia’s premier club competition.
