Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has issued a firm condemnation following the shocking assault on veteran sports journalist Haresh Deol, calling the incident unacceptable and contrary to the values upheld within Malaysian football.
The nation’s football community was shaken on 25 November, when Haresh revealed on X that he had been attacked by two unknown individuals, leaving him with minor injuries. He later lodged an official police report over the incident.
In a statement, FAM Acting President Datuk Wira Yusoff Mahadi strongly denounced the act, stressing that violence or intimidation of any form has no place in Malaysian sports.
“FAM condemns, in the strongest terms, any form of violence, intimidation or threats against any individual, including journalists who play a vital role in the national sports ecosystem,” he said.
“Any aggressive action or attempt to obstruct the professional duties of journalists is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the spirit of sportsmanship and integrity we defend.”
Yusoff urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to identify the attackers and ensure justice is served.
He added that FAM remains committed to working with media practitioners to create a safe, respectful and professional environment for all stakeholders involved in Malaysian football.
The assault has sparked widespread concern among fans, officials and media communities, with many calling for stronger protection for journalists who cover sports matters—often at the frontlines of sensitive or high-pressure situations.
