Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), today announced the appointment of Juan Torres Garrido from Spain as the head coach of the new Malaysia U23 national team for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 in Qatar next April.
The position of head coach is vacant after E. Elavarasan on September 18 let him go to focus on his original task as assistant national head coach.
Juan Torres was previously the assistant head coach of the Malaysia U23 national team to assisted E. Elavarasan since September 2022.
In terms of experience before coming to Malaysia, Juan Torres was the Head of Talent Search for FC Barcelona for the Catalunya area from 2016 to 2020, before he became the Head of Professional Youth Football (U-23) for the Granada CF club in Spain from 2021 to 2022.
FAM is confident and believes that, with the background of experience he has and that he has been in the Malaysia U23 national team system for a year, Juan Torres is able to lead this squad to face the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 in Qatar later.
In addition, FAM has decided to select and appoint former national squad captain Shukor Adan as the new assistant Malaysia U23 national team to assist Juan Torres.
The credibility, character and ability of Shukor, who is now 44 years old, is expected to help in further strengthening the players of the Malaysia U23 national team.
Shukor, however, will only officially hold the position after his contract as assistant coach of the club in Liga Super Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur City currently ends.
For the new coaching line-up of the Malaysia U23 national team, Juan Torres as Shukor Adan will assist head coach as assistant head coach; Kris Yong Wai Hwang as goalkeeper coach; Oscar Balaguer Cabeza from Spain as a fitness coach and Lee Jeyoon from the Korea Republic as a performance analysis coach.
