Marc Marquez suffered a major setback in his 2026 MotoGP title defence after being ruled out of the French Grand Prix 2026 following a heavy crash during the Tissot Sprint at Circuit Bugatti.
The dramatic incident occurred on the penultimate lap at Turn 13 and instantly stunned the packed Le Mans crowd as well as the entire MotoGP paddock.
While battling inside the top positions, the reigning world champion lost control of his Ducati machine after the front end suddenly folded underneath him. In a remarkable attempt to save the bike, Marquez dug his knee into the asphalt and briefly managed to recover the front.
However, the violent correction caused the rear of the bike to snap out of shape, ultimately launching the Spaniard over the top of the motorcycle in a brutal high-side crash.
The impact immediately ended his Sprint race in dramatic fashion.
Although Marquez was able to get back to his feet following the accident, medical examinations later confirmed that the eight-time world champion had suffered a fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.
As a result, the Ducati Lenovo Team rider has officially been declared unfit for Sunday’s Grand Prix at Le Mans.
Further disappointment followed after it was confirmed that Marquez will travel to Madrid for surgery on the fractured foot, while an additional shoulder operation — initially planned after the Catalan Grand Prix — will now be brought forward due to the latest injury setback.
MotoGP officials have also confirmed that Marquez will miss next week’s Catalan Grand Prix, dealing a significant blow to both the rider and Ducati’s championship ambitions.
The injury comes at a crucial stage of the season as Marquez had been firmly involved in the early title battle and was looking to build momentum during the European leg of the campaign.
Instead, the Le Mans Sprint turned into one of the most painful moments of his 2026 season, with the reigning champion now facing a recovery period that could reshape the championship fight in the coming weeks.
