The crucial clash was delayed for more than 90 minutes due to heavy rain and waterlogging, setting the stage for a tough battle on a drenched and slippery pitch.
Tight First Half Ends Level
Both sides struggled to impose themselves early, with Thailand nearly breaking the deadlock in the 28th minute through Yotsakorn Burapha, whose attempt sailed over the bar.
The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Kakhana Khamyok finished off a swift counter-attack to hand Thailand a 1-0 lead.
Malaysia, however, struck back just six minutes later. From a corner, Aysar Hadi pounced inside the box to level the score at 1-1. The Young Tigers nearly went ahead before halftime, but Aliff Izwan’s header was brilliantly denied by Thai goalkeeper Chommapat Boonloet.
Late Drama Breaks Malaysian Hearts
After the break, head coach Nafuzi Zain introduced Haziq Kutty for Muhammad Abu Khalil as Malaysia shifted into a compact defensive setup, looking to exploit counter-attacking opportunities.
The Young Tigers came close in the 77th minute when Syukur Fariz rose to meet a corner, only to see his header fly over the bar.
Just as the game looked set for a draw, heartbreak struck deep into stoppage time. In the 90+3rd minute, Kakhana Khamyok struck again, delivering a dramatic winner to seal Thailand’s 2-1 victory.
Thailand March On, Malaysia Crash Out
The result means Thailand top Group F and secure their ticket to the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 in Saudi Arabia.
For Malaysia, the campaign ends with three points from three matches, finishing third in the group and falling short of qualification.
