The young Malaysian squad bounced back in style as Malaysia U‑16 national team secured their first victory of the ASEAN U17 Boys Championship 2026 with a hard-fought 1-0 win over hosts Indonesia U17 national team on Thursday.
The crucial triumph at Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium in Gresik reignited Malaysia’s hopes of progressing to the semi-finals after suffering a heavy 0-4 defeat to Vietnam in their Group A opener.
In a match where defensive discipline and determination proved vital, Malaysia found the breakthrough in the 34th minute through defender Fareez Danial.
The centre-back rose highest to power a header into the Indonesian net, giving Malaysia a valuable lead heading into the halftime break.
The goal proved decisive as the Malaysian defence stood firm for the remainder of the contest.
The second half saw both teams pushing forward in search of goals, with Indonesia intensifying their attacks in front of their home crowd.
However, Malaysia’s defensive line held strong, repelling wave after wave of pressure to preserve the narrow advantage.
The disciplined performance highlighted the fighting spirit of the young Malaysian side under head coach Shukor Adan, who demanded a response following the opening-match defeat.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory, handing Malaysia their first three points of the campaign and putting their qualification hopes back on track in Group A.
Malaysia now face a must-win encounter against Timor‑Leste in their final group match on Sunday.
Victory in that match would significantly strengthen Malaysia’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals, as the young Harimau Malaya continue their quest for regional glory in the ASEAN youth championship.
