Malaysian badminton contingent continued to make headlines in the Li-Ning Hong Kong Open 2025, producing stunning victories, thrilling battles, and heartbreaking exits on Day 2 of the Round of 32.
The biggest shock came in an all-Malaysian clash as Leong Jun Hao stunned national star Lee Zii Jia, winning 21-16, 21-16. Jun Hao’s relentless consistency overwhelmed the former Asian champion, sending him crashing out in the first round.
Meanwhile, rising sensation Justin Hoh pulled off a massive upset against eighth seed Toma Junior Popov of France. The 19-year-old dominated with speed and precision, sealing a 21-12, 21-17 victory to underline his growing reputation as Malaysia’s next big hope in men’s singles.
Malaysia’s mixed doubles pairs also shone brightly. Seventh seeds Goh Soon Huat – Shevon Lai proved their class by defeating Lin Bing-Wei – Lin Jhih Yun 13-21, 23-21, 21-8, recovering strongly after a slow start. Another pair, Hoo Pang Ron – Cheng Su Yin, controlled their match with confidence, beating Oleksii Titov – Yevheniia Kantemyr 21-14, 21-14.
In men’s singles, Aidil Sholeh showed his fighting spirit, edging out Chi Yu Jen 15-21, 21-18, 21-15 in a hard-fought encounter, while Choong Hon Jian – Haikal Nazri battled past Korea’s experienced duo Kim Gi Jung – Kim Sa Rang 21-11, 16-21, 21-18 to secure their place in the next round.
However, not all went Malaysia’s way. Letshanaa Karupathevan fell just short against China’s Zhang Wen Yu, losing 22-24, 16-21 despite a spirited opening game. Men’s doubles pair Low Hang Yee – Ng Eng Cheong also bowed out after a 15-21, 15-21 defeat to China’s Huang Di – Liu Yang.
The day ended with heartbreak for Wong Tien Ci – Lim Chiew Sien, who pushed fifth seeds Tang Chun Man – Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong to the limit before falling 21-13, 10-21, 9-21.
With the emergence of young stars like Justin Hoh and the resurgence of players such as Leong Jun Hao, Malaysia’s campaign at the Hong Kong Open 2025 remains filled with promise, even as seasoned names make early exits.
