Co-host nation Canada were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bosnia & Herzegovina in their opening Group B match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at BMO Field, Toronto.
Jesse Marsch’s side controlled possession and created numerous opportunities throughout the match, but Bosnia’s disciplined defensive display and a series of crucial interventions denied the Canadians a winning start on home soil.
The result leaves Canada with work to do in Group B, although a late equaliser ensured they avoided an opening defeat in front of their home supporters.
Canada began aggressively and earned a corner within the opening minute as they looked to impose themselves immediately.
The hosts enjoyed the majority of possession and came close to opening the scoring on several occasions. Promise David, Oluwaseyi, and Stephen Eustáquio all threatened, while Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj produced several important saves to keep the match level.
Despite Canada’s attacking pressure, it was Bosnia & Herzegovina who struck first in the 21st minute.
A well-worked corner routine saw captain Sead Kolašinac flick the ball across goal, allowing Jovo Lukić to score his first-ever international goal and stun the home crowd with a close-range finish.
The goal shifted momentum temporarily, but Canada continued pushing forward in search of an equaliser before halftime, only to find Bosnia’s defence standing firm.
The second half followed a familiar pattern as Canada intensified their attacks.
Bosnia survived several dangerous moments, including a remarkable goal-line clearance by Kolašinac and multiple interventions from defender Nihad Katić. Goalkeeper Vasilj also remained busy as Canada’s forwards continued to test the Bosnian backline.
Canada’s persistence was finally rewarded in the 79th minute. Substitute Cyle Larin, who had only recently entered the match, received possession outside the penalty area before unleashing a precise strike into the net to level the score at 1-1.
The equaliser sparked renewed belief among the Canadian supporters, and the hosts pushed for a dramatic winner during the closing stages. However, Bosnia defended resolutely to secure a valuable point.
While Canada will be disappointed not to claim all three points, the performance demonstrated the attacking quality that has made them one of CONCACAF’s most exciting teams heading into the tournament.
Bosnia & Herzegovina, meanwhile, showed tremendous resilience under pressure and were rewarded with an important point against one of the tournament’s co-hosts.
For Canada, the focus now shifts to improving their finishing and converting possession into goals as the group stage progresses.
The draw leaves both nations with one point from their opening match and keeps Group B finely balanced heading into Matchday Two.
Canada will be eager to build on their positive attacking display and secure their first victory of the tournament, while Bosnia & Herzegovina will take confidence from frustrating one of the host nations in a high-pressure environment.
