Malaysia endured a mixed bag of results on Day 1 of the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2026 as several national representatives advanced to the Round of 16, while others saw their campaigns end early at the prestigious HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1000 event.
In women’s doubles, national pairs Ong Xin Yee–Carmen Ting were unable to withstand the Japanese challenge, going down 16-21, 11-21 to Rui Hirokami–Sayaka Hobara, marking an early exit for the Malaysians.
The disappointment continued in mixed doubles as Jimmy Wong–Lai Pei Jing fell in straight games, 10-21, 9-21, to Hong Kong’s seventh seeds Tang Chun Man–Tse Ying Suet. Another mixed doubles tie ended prematurely when Wong Tien Ci–Lim Chiew Sien were forced to retire while trailing China’s world No.1 pair Feng Yan Zhe–Huang Dong Ping, a tough blow against the tournament favourites.
However, there was cheer for the home crowd as Hoo Pang Ron–Cheng Su Yin showed grit and composure to outlast Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen–Alexandra Bøje in a thrilling three-game encounter, winning 20-22, 21-18, 21-17 to book their place in the next round.
Fourth seeds Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei justified their billing with a confident 21-12, 21-17 win over Indonesia’s Jafar Hidayatullah–Felisha A.N. Pasaribu, keeping Malaysia’s hopes alive in the mixed doubles category.
In men’s singles, Lee Zii Jia was unable to overturn India’s Ayush Shetty, bowing out 12-21, 17-21 in the Round of 32 despite flashes of his trademark attacking play.
Malaysia’s strength in men’s doubles once again shone through. World-class duo Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani brushed aside Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard–Mads Vestergaard 21-15, 21-13, while fifth seeds Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun delivered a solid 21-17, 21-18 victory over Danish combination Kim Astrup–Anders S. Rasmussen.
Adding to the positives, Azriyn Ayub–Tan Wee Kiong fought back from a game down to defeat compatriots Ong Yew Sin–Teo Ee Yi 11-21, 24-22, 21-11 in an all-Malaysian clash that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats.
Meanwhile, Choong Hon Jian–Haikal Nazri battled hard but eventually fell 21-16, 16-21, 15-21 to England’s Ben Lane–Sean Vendy, ending their challenge in the opening round.
