Thailand badminton star Kunlavut Vitidsarn is facing an anxious wait ahead of the Indonesia Open 2026 after being forced to retire from the Singapore Open due to a back injury on Wednesday.
The world No. 2 men’s singles player shocked fans after withdrawing during his Round of 16 clash against India’s Lakshya Sen at the Singapore Open, with the Thai ace managing to play only two points before deciding he could not continue.
According to the latest update from the national team’s medical and physiotherapy staff, Kunlavut had already been experiencing tightness in his back prior to the match. However, during an explosive stretching shot early in the contest, the discomfort immediately worsened and signs of inflammation appeared.
Following discussions between the coaching staff and medical team, the decision was made to stop the match immediately in order to prevent the injury from becoming more serious.
The setback now puts Kunlavut’s participation in next week’s prestigious Indonesia Open 2026 in doubt.
The Thai shuttler is scheduled to fly back to Thailand tonight and will undergo a detailed MRI scan on May 29 to assess the condition of his back muscles and spinal structure before doctors determine whether he is fit enough to compete in the BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta.
The timing comes as a major concern for Thailand’s badminton camp, with Kunlavut entering one of the most important stretches of the season following a series of strong performances on the international circuit.
Known for his calm composure, tactical intelligence and relentless movement on court, Kunlavut has emerged as one of Asia’s biggest medal hopes this season and remains a leading contender in every major tournament he enters.
Thailand supporters will now be hoping the injury scare is only minor, with the focus turning toward the MRI results that could determine whether the former world champion is ready to challenge again at one of badminton’s biggest stages in Indonesia next week.
